INTRODUCCIÓN DEL CURSO

Airway management is one of the core competencies in anaesthesiology, critical care and emergency medicine. These airway management skills cannot be taught through books or lectures. Critical care physicians mostly teach the establishment of a patent airway in the busy clinical environment of a hospital very often without a formal teaching program. Therefore, EAMS created the Teach the Airway Teacher course (TAT course) aiming at these experienced teaching clinicians as the main target population to foster airway training on modern didactic background. Residents might be accepted depending on their engagement to airway management.

In 2013 the European Airway Management Society started the Teach the Airway Teacher program during the ESA conference in Barcelona. Since then EAMS has held TAT courses in Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Qatar, Turkey, Italy, Portugal, Chile and Argentina. TAT has been taught at conferences, as a stand-alone course, combined with AM-courses and in modules over weeks.

The EAMS TAT course follows modern didactic principles. The flipped classroom concept provides time for preparation and acquisition of knowledge on teaching. On site learning will happen due to practice, discussion, rehearsal, and collegial exchange in small groups and plenary discussions. To transfer the learned into the participants’ teaching practice fostering long term effect a post course assignment needs to be fulfilled to achieve the EAMS Airway Teacher certificate. As the Covid-19 pandemic brought down all face-to-face teaching, EAMS evolved the TAT course towards a hybrid format, which combined e-learning to facilitate cognitive knowledge acquisition in a self-regulated manner with on-site class teaching of skills, teaching exercises and a classroom simulation.

The course programme covers: approaches for airway management teaching; how successful airway management teaching events might be organized; how to motivate learners; the facilitation of complex psychomotor skills and human factors; debriefing, effective feedback and assessment of learners; and the praxis of teaching airway management. Pre-course reading and post-course assignments deepens the learning success.

The EAMS TAT Faculty are experienced airway teachers specially trained in educating airway management teaching during the EAMS TAT Master Class.

The vision of the EAMS TAT course is to introduce medical education to increase teaching competencies in airway skills teaching, in human factors teaching improving leadership and team performance.

The general goals of the EAMS TAT course are to amplify the teaching toolbox of the clinical teachers in airway management, to discuss and learn new approaches to teach effectively in the busy clinical environment by fostering collegial exchange between the participants.

EAMS plans to provide the opportunity to update these airway teaching competences by implementing a recertification program to keep its “Airway Teachers” up-to-date and on a high level of teaching competences.
